Many Covers Monday: The Diviners by Libba Bray

Today we're looking at the many different covers of Libba Bray's The Diviners and choosing a winner! Some are rejackets and others are foreign language covers.

Evie O’Neill has been exiled from her boring old hometown and shipped off to the bustling streets of New York City—and she is pos-i-tute-ly ecstatic. It’s 1926, and New York is filled with speakeasies, Ziegfeld girls, and rakish pickpockets. The only catch is that she has to live with her uncle Will and his unhealthy obsession with the occult.
Evie worries he’ll discover her darkest secret: a supernatural power that has only brought her trouble so far. But when the police find a murdered girl branded with a cryptic symbol and Will is called to the scene, Evie realizes her gift could help catch a serial killer.
As Evie jumps headlong into a dance with a murderer, other stories unfold in the city that never sleeps. A young man named Memphis is caught between two worlds. A chorus girl named Theta is running from her past. A student named Jericho hides a shocking secret. And unknown to all, something dark and evil has awakened.

I confess, I haven't read The Diviners. I tried once but couldn't get into it. So my opinions will of someone who has no clue what the book is even about. I think it's about some sort of 1920's America with... magic? Dead people? I realise I should have read the book's description by now considering it's above this text.

(UK/US) I love the font of UK. I love the cover... up to about half way down. I think the city silhouette and the lone woman is a bit... cheesy? It feels like a one woman Charlie's Angels. The US cover is much better, very mysterious but with the illustrations, font and the city skyline in the background, it gives away a few clues as to what might be lurking inside...

(US) Creepy ghosts struggle to obtain normality in 1920's America? And they live under a bridge?
I love this cover to the right. Or I would if one-woman Charlie's Angels hadn't made a comeback. And brought one of the bloody searchlights with her.

(Australian/Italian) Yes. I seriously like the Australian cover! The hands are super gothic and the font is just perfect. And I love the Tarot Card! The Italian cover is interesting, I first noticed that they've changed the title and I translated it. Apparently, it says 'The Black Star of New York', which, you'll agree, is super catchy title. I don't think much of their bored Cleopatra wannabe either.

(Portuguese/Spanish) ''Let's stick a girl on it. No, don't get one that looks like she's from 1920's New York, just any stock image will do.'' *sigh* The Spanish is nice though, I really like it. And the random head is actually pretty cute and is obviously from 1920's New York.

(Polish/UK) I think the Polish cover looks a bit... self published? It does look like it's got the right setting, though. I really like this UK cover, which I think is for the current UK paperback. I think my only problem with is is having the girl's face so in shadow. But that's more of a personal thing.

Winner

I had to pick this one! I think it's perfect although if you've read the book, you might disagree. Which cover was your favourite?

  1. Oh I absolutely agree! I was just looking at them without look specifically what country they were from...but Aussie rules!! It's so creepy and intriguing. I love how you compare all these covers, it's just darn awesome. ;)

  2. That Portuguese cover looks a lot like the Code Name Verity/Rose Under Fire UK covers. My copy of the book has the ugly purple American cover, and I'm not a fan.

  3. I prefer the 4th, 5th and 8th cover but honestly I don't love any of them.

  4. I have no idea what the book is about (oops!) but I like the UK one the best, though none of them are really exceptional to me. I agree with you about the bottom half, but I love the top half and the colors so much that it take the focus away from the weird bottom. (Apparently I am easily distracted ;) )

  5. I love the US hardcover one the most but of all of them, I think the Australian one fits the book best. The Spanish one is pretty gorgeous too. Great post!
