Many Covers Monday - The Name of the Star

After a long absence, welcome back to Many Covers Monday! Today we're looking at the many different covers of Maureen Johnson's The Name of the Star. Some are rejackets and others are foreign language covers.

Jack the Ripper is back,
and he's coming for Rory next....
Louisiana teenager Rory Deveaux arrives in London to start a new life at boarding school just as a series of brutal murders mimicking the horrific Jack the Ripper killing spree of more than a century ago has broken out across the city. The police are left with few leads and no witnesses. Except one. Rory spotted the man believed to be the prime suspect. But she is the only one who saw him - the only one who can see him. And now Rory has become his next target...unless she can tap her previously unknown abilities to turn the tables.

Left: The original US cover released in 2011. It's a nice cover but if that cheesy halloween costumed Jack the Ripper is supposed to scary they've lost me.
Right: The original UK cover and my favourite. The London chimney tops are unmistakeable and the girl adds a touch of Victorian Gothic. Both elements reflect the book perfectly.

Left: The Dutch people liked the US cover and just changed it a bit while keeping the weird Jack the Ripper silhouette. I'm not sure about the orange mist and the choice of fonts would make you think of a self published novel. This was published in 2012.
Right: I'm guessing this is the re-jacket for the US, published in 2012. It's my least favourite as anyone from England would know that image of the park is not English. We don't have benches or lamps like that sorry. And our paths aren't planned, we just look at where people have been walking and dump a bit of concrete on it.

Left: This is the Greek cover published in 2012. I actually really like this cover, with the mysterious figure in the background and the pigeons flying around and stuff.
Right: This Czech cover printed in 2011 makes the same mistake as the 2012 rejacket - those chimney things look nothing like London chimneys. On top of that, I don't think I've seen a girl with that hair do since the Victorian era. Overall I think the cover is a bit too dark to really catch someone's eye.

Which cover was your favourite? Did you feel they fit well with the book? Let me know in the comments!

Next week: Delirium by Lauren Oliver

  4. I have the US HB edition, which has the 1st cover shown here. But, it's pretty and shiny in person. I definitely like it best.

It doesn't surprise me that Cassandra Clare is quoted on the UK cover, since it reminds me of the TMI covers, except in B&W.
