Review of Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince

When Dumbledore arrives at Privet Drive one summer night to collect Harry Potter, his wand hand is blackened and shrivelled, but he does not reveal why. Secrets and suspicion are spreading through the wizarding world, and Hogwarts itself is not safe. Harry is convinced that Malfoy bears the Dark Mark: there is a Death Eater amongst them. Harry will need powerful magic and true friends as he explores Voldemort’s darkest secrets, and Dumbledore prepares him to face his destiny...

I can't write a 'proper' review of Harry Potter. I'm 26, so when Harry Potter was released I was right at the age it was marketed towards. I remember starting to notice the hype around Harry Potter when the third book was released (I was 8) and I bought all three books for my holiday. I didn't have a great childhood to be honest and these books were very much my escape. I would beg and beg to get a copy on the release date and my Gran would literally have to fight crowds to get them, I've never seen so much hype around any other book since. So basically, I can't review something that was my entire childhood - here's everything I loved during this re-read instead (and some other stuff) (also I'm presuming that you've read the book, so potential spoilers)
  •  The group's official Ministry Of Magic badges being titled 'Harry Potter, Rescue Mission'
  • Dumbledore making himself completely at home via forcing the Dursley's onto a sofa before getting out a bottle of mead
  • Dumbledore deciding that the best way to make sure he's not an imposter is to ask him his favourite flavour of jam
  • Raspberry '...although of course, if I were a Death Eater, I would have been sure to research my own jam-preferences before impersonating myself.'
  • Real actual rotting flesh zombies
  • Harry just slowly going darker - dark Harry is best Harry
  • Dumbledore looking at knitting patterns
  • 'Harry had spent nearly all his time at the Dursleys' lying on his bed, refusing meals and staring at the misted window, full of the chill emptiness that he had come to associate with Dementors.' Rowling often said that Dementors represented depression and she totally gets it
  • 'said Dumbledore, with an approving pat on Harry's back. 'I take my hat off to you - or I would, if I were not afraid of showering you in spiders.' Dumbledore wtf
  • Tonks pining after Lupin the whole book was actually really really annoying? I mean Sirius JUST DIED. Get your shit together?
  •  Karkaroff's death getting all of one line basically. Oh well, he was a twat.
  • 'Why Are You Worrying About You-Know-Who? You SHOULD Be Worrying About U-NO-POO - the Constipation Sensation That's Gripping The Nation!'
  • 'Draco Malfoy with his back to them, just visible beyond the very same large black cabinet in which Harry had once hidden to avoid Malfoy and his father.' for fucks sake Harry how many times does this thing have to be name dropped
  • 'I enjoyed those meetings, too,' said Luna serenely. 'It was like having friends.' aw Luna
  • Snape - 'Do you remember me telling you we are practising non-verbal spells, Potter?' 'Yes,' said Harry stiffly. 'Yes sir.' 'There's no need to call me "sir", Professor.' SHADE
  • 'Lord Voldemort has never had a friend, nor do I believe that he has ever wanted one.' Yeah didn't stop him having a kid apparently though did it
  • That I was totally correct in saying that any of the Weasley's could have performed magic underage - it's a location spell that isn't specific so as long as there's an adult wizard in the house you're fine
  • Young Snape's super elaborate potion to cure poisoning - 'Just shove a bezoar down their throats'
  • '...Harry had no difficulty whatsoever in recognising as Voldemort. He was plainly dressed in a black suit; his hair was a little longer than it had been at school and his cheeks were hollowed, but all of this suited him: he looked more handsome than ever.' Harry is totally into that.
  • 'took a left at the broken Vanishing Cabinet in which Montague had got lost the previous year' MY GOD HARRY

Weekly Update (16/06/2018)

So there's this comic by the rather brilliant Catana Comics that sums me up perfectly.

Which is really cute and funny until you end up breaking commitments and not reviewing your NetGalley and just generally end up in a spiral of avoidance where you feel like you'll never achieve anything. I have this thing where I go through phases, so usually I will read 50+ books and then drop the blog for like a year before coming back to it and somehow convincing myself that that's obviously not going to happen again. Which is always does.

This time I've been distracted with cross stitch. I don't do anything by halves, so instead of just picking up a piece and stitching occaisionally I've made a blog and I've started making free patterns, which is something I used to do and I miss it, so I really want to continue with that. But I also don't want to abandon this blog. So I put myself on a 2 week hiatus instead, to see if forcing myself to take a break would be the thing that breaks the cycle.

And I think that it's working? I'm here, on the date I said. I'm actually writing this post on the 10th, because I actually felt like getting up and doing that today. I quite feel like reading again too! So as long as I keep checking on myself and work out what's working, there's a very good chance I can balance everything I need to do.

Obviously, I've not been reading - so here's what I need to catch up on instead:

NetGalley

Seven isn't actually too bad - some of them are from May but most are from June.

Review Requests

In total that's just 10 books and I'm a fast reader - as I'm writing this from the 10th that's 20 days to catch up, so one every two days is easy for me.

The Other Blog

If you're into cross stitch my new blog is Witch Stitch and I'm also on Instagram - it's WIPs, free patterns, wishlist patterns and kits, all that sort of thing. Here's a cloud pattern I made that you can download for free:

I have a Pirate pattern coming up too, I just need to stitch him.

Weekly Wrap Up (02/06/2018)

I don't know where the time has gone this month but now I feel like I'm trying to play catch up and failing. I didn't manage to get a Weekly post last week simply due to being busy and exhausted.

Willow's 3rd birthday went terribly - she ended up with tonsilitus and spent the day in a fluffy blanket with her new doll, we didn't bother trying to give presents or anything, she just wanted to lie on the couch and nap.

We did manage to get out on Sunday though and redid her birthday at Wookey Hole with CAKE. It was pretty amazing there, we slightly went crazy in the gift shop where I bought myself a stuffed owl I've named Gatsby, Willow got a cuddly dinosaur and my partner got cheese, wine and chutney amongst the other things we bought.

Read This Week

I finally FINALLY finished re-reading Harry Potter and even squeezed in Cursed Child, which wasn't quite as bad I was expecting. I got Skylarks from NetGalley because gay YA but it was really bogged down with a poverty gap storyline that didn't really work.

Song Of The Week

Yes that is Clay from 13 Reasons Why.

Goodbye May, Hello June!

I'm really, really not ready to say goodbye to May. It seems to have come and gone in a flash. This month I've visited Bath, Wookey Hole and Weston-Super-Mare, spent my daughter's birthday indoors as she had tonsillitus, read far less than I wanted to, binge watched Versailles, started binge watching The Handmaid's Tale and started a cross stitch blog.

I'm exhausted.

Last Month's Anticipated Releases

I was sure that I'd manage to read all of these this month but I didn't account for my Gran visiting or reading the entire Harry Potter series impulsively. We always get so busy when she visits as we try and squeeze in as much stuff to do as possible, so that combined with just how long some of the Harry Potter books are means a very stressed out Vee.

I read and loved both Brightly Burning and The Smoke Thieves, giving them a full 5 stars each so clearly I'm excellent at this picking books lark. And somehow on the 31st managed to squeeze in LIFEL1K3 which was so freaking good it might just have shot up to the top spot of my 2018 favourites list.

Anticipated June Releases

I've already read A Thousand Perfect Notes by the rather talented blogger PaperFury and I can 100% confirm that bloggers aren't hyping this book just because they're a fellow blogger - this book is truly special. With that, I have a retelling of Tristan and Iseult, which I have never read (sorry), a book about toxic friendships that I just know I'll relate to and an Anthology, which just sounded too good to pass on - even if I had vowed to never read another anthology.

That's all for this month! Hopefully if you stop by next month I'll have caught up and be totally relaxed again.
