Monthly Update (01/12/2019)

How is it the last month of the year already? I started reading again in October and November has flown by, despite me being stuck indoors, ill with a chest infection for most of it.

I had a fairly bad reading month this month, I got stuck reading the entirety of the Maze Runner series for pretty much the entire period I was ill and I didn't enjoy it very much. After that nearly every book I read seemed to be disappointing, although I ended on a high note with The Lie Tree and Goblet Of Fire.

Read This Month

Whew. 14 books in total and here's the ratings and short review summary:

Ten Thousand Doors Of January - My favourite book of the month and likely the year too. Somehow managed to remind me of every book I loved as a child. 5/5
The Knife Of Never Letting Go - I found this to be overhyped and too focused on extreme violence. The plot was basic and too much of the story was just walking from one place to another. 2/5
The Starless Sea - quite a lot like January with all the doors, I thought this one was trippy as hell but I loved it. And I totally shipped Zachary and Dorian. 5/5
The Maze Runner - the idea was better than the execution, characters were lacking but this an old favourite all the same. 4/5
The Scorch Trials - suffered from very little character development and new characters should have been intriduced. Theresa was intensely annoying. 3/5
The Death Cure - A very poor ending, suffered from the same problems as Scorch Trials. It felt like the author was emotionally detached from the series. 2/5
The Kill Order - Just absolutely pointless and added nothing to the series. 1/5
The Fever Code - Finally added something to the series, all I wanted was to spend some time with the original Gladers, which I got, so I was happy. 4/5
Alice In Wonderland - my Bookishly edition of the month and a great way to kick off my subscription, I love Alice so much. 5/5
Winterwood - one of my pre-orders, so an anticipated book, this suffered from too much purple prose, plot holes and a very weak ending. 2/5
Crown Of Oblivion - another of my pre-orders, this felt like a first draft with so much thrown at it and nothing stuck. 2/5
Wayfarer - sequel to Passenger, this really, really plodded along and I was only able to finish due to a mammoth 3 hour binge reading session. The ending was good though! 3/5
The Lie Tree - my mood really picked up reading this one, and Chris Riddell's illustrations helped. I loved this late 1800s tale of science, feminism and religion.
Goblet Of Fire - The illustrated edition is out now and as it's my favourite book of the series I thought why not? Most of the illustrations are freaking gorgeous but emo Krum had me and an Instagram friend in stitches. 5/5

Goodbye May, Hello June!

I'm really, really not ready to say goodbye to May. It seems to have come and gone in a flash. This month I've visited Bath, Wookey Hole and Weston-Super-Mare, spent my daughter's birthday indoors as she had tonsillitus, read far less than I wanted to, binge watched Versailles, started binge watching The Handmaid's Tale and started a cross stitch blog.

I'm exhausted.

Last Month's Anticipated Releases

I was sure that I'd manage to read all of these this month but I didn't account for my Gran visiting or reading the entire Harry Potter series impulsively. We always get so busy when she visits as we try and squeeze in as much stuff to do as possible, so that combined with just how long some of the Harry Potter books are means a very stressed out Vee.

I read and loved both Brightly Burning and The Smoke Thieves, giving them a full 5 stars each so clearly I'm excellent at this picking books lark. And somehow on the 31st managed to squeeze in LIFEL1K3 which was so freaking good it might just have shot up to the top spot of my 2018 favourites list.

Anticipated June Releases

I've already read A Thousand Perfect Notes by the rather talented blogger PaperFury and I can 100% confirm that bloggers aren't hyping this book just because they're a fellow blogger - this book is truly special. With that, I have a retelling of Tristan and Iseult, which I have never read (sorry), a book about toxic friendships that I just know I'll relate to and an Anthology, which just sounded too good to pass on - even if I had vowed to never read another anthology.

That's all for this month! Hopefully if you stop by next month I'll have caught up and be totally relaxed again.

Goodbye April, Hello May!

Apparently May is happening tomorrow and I honestly thought that April had just started! I can't keep up. I'll reluctantly say goodbye to April and head into May, which is the month of my daughter's 3rd birthday - we're heading to a zoo so I may try and dedicate a post to that later in the month!

A monthly wrap up post is a new thing for my blog so in future I'll be referencing previous posts and link back to them.

DNF: 1 Book (Nowhere Else But Here by Rachel Cotton)

I managed to read 16 books this month, I'm pretty happy with that! On the downside I don't like to rate a book 1 Star unless absolutely necessary and having two rated that in one month shows that I've had a pretty bad reading month. I'm hoping May brings some great things but I think it'll be a NetGalley catch up month for me! I did manage to get 5 NetGalley books read this month at least.

Anticipated May Releases

From a high fantasy set centuries apart to a scrap metal post apocalyptic to YA Game Of Thrones followed by JANE EYRE IN SPACE, I'm determined to make some time to finish these four in May. I'll let you know my thoughts on my next Monthly wrap up post on June 1st!
